What’s the Origin of “Blessed Be”?
The origin of “Blessed Be” is the “Five-Fold Kiss”, an element of Wiccan ritual which involves blessing five sacred parts of the body. It was originally published by Gerald Gardner and appears in many Wiccan texts and books by authors such as Silver Ravenwolf.
What does “Blessed Be” Mean in Wicca?
Blessed be is used as a standard way of greeting each other among Neopagans and also used as a general expression of blessing during ritual. It invokes the protection of the Divinity/God/Goddess and their Spirit over a person, a place, or a thing. 🙌
In some forms of this prayer, with each blessing an area of the body is sealed with a kiss. The “Blessed Be” prayer or “Five-Fold Kiss” can be performed during Wiccan rites and ceremonies, such as handfasting or the Drawing Down the Moon Rite.
Certain types of Wiccans perform this blessing upon the High Priestess (by the High Priest) or by the High Priestess upon the High Priest. The ritual symbolises the act of honoring the person as a vessel of the female or male version of Deity, as it is in the Charge of the God and the Charge of the Goddess.
