Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed
Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed is specially formulated for successful fall seeding projects. Use this seed mixture to overseed an existing lawn or to plant a brand new lawn in the autumn.
Black Beauty® Fall Magic is the ideal grass seed mixture to use when repairing summer disease and insect damage in lawns. The grass seed varieties in Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed are bred to perform especially well when seeded during the fall planting season of September through November. This seed germinates in 10 – 14 days.
For the best results, follow the directions below for establishing a new lawn or overseeding an existing one.
- Mow – Mow the lawn at the lowest mower setting before seeding to allow the seed to reach the soil.
- Rake– R ake over the existing grass with a metal rake to remove the thatch layer and any debris to loosen the soil . Add additional topsoil to fill in holes and level the ground.
- Check soil pH level – Have a soil test taken to check your soil’s pH level. The optimum soil pH should be between 6.2 to 7.0. For a pH below 6.2 use Jonathan Green MAG-I-CAL® Plus for Acidic & Hard Soil to rapidly increase pH. If the pH is above 7.0 use MAG-I-CAL® Plus for Alkaline & Hard Soil to rapidly decrease the soil pH.
- When to apply – The best time to apply seed is mid-August to mid-October while the ground is still warm and the nights are cooler. Mid-March through mid-May is the next best time to plant when the soil temperature reaches 55 º + Fahrenheit and the temperature of the air stays consistently warm.
- Spread seed – Apply half of the seed with a rotary spreader in one direction (north to south) and the remainder in the opposite direction (east to west). It is beneficial to spread a new seeding fertilizer that is high in phosphorus at this time as well.
- Rake seed – Rake lightly into the ground with a metal rake. Walk with light, even footsteps on the seedbed to firm the soil around the seed. Do not bury the seed more than one-fourth of an inch deep.
- Water – For best germination, water daily to keep the seedbed moist. Continue watering regularly for a few weeks until the grass plants reach a height of 2 – 2.5 inches.
- Mow – Begin mowing when the new grass has reached a height of 3 – 4 inches. Make sure the mower has sharp blades. Be careful not to scalp the lawn, low mowing will stress the root system and encourage the growth of weeds .

Germinated quickly cut 30 days applied Milorganite after Thanksgiving. Came up fine in spring 2021. Applied Milorganite Memorial & 4th July weekends. Died summer 2021 – renovating again this time not with JG product
JG Response – If the seed came up and the grass was doing well, then the issue was not with the grass. There are many outside influences that can cause grass to die such as wrong climate or conditions for the seed chosen, disease and insects.
i thought i might have missed the growing season Review by Matt on October 26, 2020I had been working on a project to clear the back half of my property, about 1/2 an acre, and was surprised when everything fell together and I complete the work by October 10th. I thought that I was not going to complete the work until early December. Now that I was a head of schedule, I needed to get grass seed down ASAP so I would be able to establish a lawn this fall and help to choke out weeds in the spring. the temps were in the low to mid 60\’s during the days and in the low 50\’s at night. I thought that it might have gotten to cold to get grass seed to germinate. I put 25LB\’s of this fall magic down because it seemed like the best option and of all the recommendations for the Johnathan Green seed I had read it looked like the best option. I put down the seed on Saturday and set up the sprinklers and hoped I would get some germination. boy, did I ever! the entire yard has evenly germinated and is now starting to thicken up. I am now at two weeks and I hope to be able to walk on it a bit by next week. I need to remove some fallen leaves that are now covering the lawn. I want very impressed with the results of this seed compared to other seeds I have used. this came up fast and green. I will definitely over seed with a different blend in the spring but I am very happy with the product as of right now.

Doesnt grow deep strong roots, so when the dog ran across it, it was flattened and pulled up quickly…then again, we have a active big dog. It sprouts quick enough, you can quickly reseed areas.

Review by James Clark on October 2, 2019After trying to reseed parts of the lawn that are just dead for over 3 years with the generic big box grass seed, decided to try this, as I read a review from somebody in northern Virginia, who said it worked for them. Loosened the areas to be reseeded with a rake, threw some potting soil down in the patches, mixed in the grass seed, and watered. I am no expert level gardener. To my surprise, it grew ! Lovely, fresh, green grass. I will buy more and tackle the rest of the bare patches. Planted mid September and its now the beginning of October and coming in nicely. Previously, I had seeded in spring. Fall seems to work better round here. Will be buying more.

I suggest using a mechanical spreader and to seed as thickly as possible. It will only make the final outcome look that much better. In the areas I skimped with the seeds, it shows. The grass is lush, dark green, soft.

Follow the directions Review by To buy or not buy on November 21, 2018I cut the grass a few days prior to spreading the seeds. The forecast called for rain, which was great. It rained for several days for a couple of weeks. The grass grew as advertised. I have a few acres so the grass is not grouped tight. This is my fault due to the fact that I wanted to be sure the product worked. I will weed and feed in January then wait for the directed time. I will buy several of their spring seed bags and saturate the area with the seeds. I would recommend this to anyone who plan to follow the directions. If you’re not going to cut the lawn and water as directed I believe just buying pallets of grass would be better for your emotions and your yard.

We had tried the Scott’s EZ Seed in the spring, along with fertilizer and it didn’t grow at all. In addition to that, I think I was just so pissed off that I didn’t water or tend to the grass as normal. This October I said enough is enough and I raked up all the dead grass from the urine spots, had the dog trained within 2 days to go elsewhere, and began reading reviews for grass seed. Ordered this and felt fairly confident in the produc. True enough..2 bags of this, VERY minimal soil prep (only rolling a manual tiller around in a pretty haphazard way) and my grass is looking great! As others have commented, within a week and a half I had sprouts about 1-2″. The grass is wispy, but beautiful. I just came on to order 2 more bags in addition to the 45 lb bag Winter Survival by Jonathan Green. This time, since I know for certain it works, I will use a spreader and just overseed my entire yard for a more lush and dense grass. I have used a few different brands previously…but this is truly the best that I have ever found. The absolute most important thing is to WATER your lawn every day while this takes root.

They’re still sitting in our yard here and there two months later. These seeds took about 9-10 days to start sprouting and have performed very well to fill in some of the gaps in our yard. In most areas I didn’t prep but in a few I used a garden weasel to soften the ground where it had gotten hard. We planted in October in Tennessee.

Dethatched, aerated and planted last Weds and a week later the lawn looks amazing. Came in fast and lush and in some shady areas beneath cedar tree as well. You can see in the pic the new grass after a single week. Shade plantings are a bit alower but still coming in nicely.

I used a dethatcher blade to scratche up my old lawn, set some fertilizer down with this seed, and the barely covered it with a fine layer of mulch. About a quarter inch. Then watered the heck out of it. Great result after 2 weeks of mostly full sun.
