Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

Magic open 2022-23 season with 2 road games, play home opener Oct. 22

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic will start the 2022-23 NBA season with two road games for only the second time in franchise history and will play their home opener Saturday, Oct. 22 against the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics, the Magic announced Wednesday.

What You Need To Know

  • The Orlando Magic will begin their 2022-23 season on the road on Oct. 19
  • The team's first home game is Oct. 22
  • The Magic have one nationally televised game this season, on TNT
  • The team ends the regular season with two games on the road

The Magic will travel to Detroit for their opener on Wednesday, Oct. 19, setting up a matchup between 2022 No. 1 draft pick Paolo Banchero for the Magic and 2021 top selection Cade Cunningham for the Pistons.

On Friday, Oct. 21, Orlando will pay a visit to the Hawks in Atlanta in a divisional matchup that will feature Banchero and guard DeJounte Murray, a game made particularly interesting because of what happened when they faced off in a pro-am tournament in Tacoma, Wash., earlier this month. Murray dunked on Banchero, who has not yet played in an NBA regular-season game, and taunted him and then continued to engage with him on Twitter. Both players are from Washington, and this is Murray’s first year with the Hawks after Atlanta acquired him in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.

The road travels will not end there. Orlando opens with six of its first eight games on the road.

The last road game in that string is the first NBA meeting between Banchero and this year’s No. 2 overall draft pick, Chet Holmgren, on Nov. 1 in Oklahoma City. That game is the team’s lone scheduled national TV game of the year, and it is on TNT. Three Orlando games are scheduled to air on NBA TV.

The Magic's longest home stand of the season will come in November, when the team plays seven in a row at the Amway Center from Nov. 3-16. That home stand will include the lone visit from the defending champion Golden State Warriors (Nov. 3) and the lone visit from Jabari Smith Jr. and the Houston Rockets (Nov. 7). Many insiders predicted that the Magic would select Smith with the top overall pick before the team selected Banchero instead.

Orlando's longest road trip will take place from Jan. 7-15, when they head out West on a trip that will feature games against the Warriors (Jan. 7) and two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets (Jan. 15).

The Magic’s busiest months will be November, December and March, when they play 15 games each.

The team is scheduled to play on back-to-back nights 13 times (26 days). Orlando will also play six sets of games against the same team back to back, playing both home games against the Philadelphia 76ers starting the day after Thanksgiving on Nov. 25 and 27, both home games against the Toronto Raptors on Dec. 9 and 11, both road games against the Celtics on Dec. 16 and 18 and both games against the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 4 and 6. The Magic will play both of their road games in Indiana, on Nov. 19 and 21, and in Philadelphia, on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1.

The Magic will close their season with consecutive road games against the Brooklyn Nets (April 7) and Miami Heat (April 9). Orlando's final home game of the season will take place April 6 against the Cavaliers.

The only other time in franchise history that Orlando opened the season with two road games was in the 2013-14 season, against the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves. They finished that season with a 23-59 record.

The Magic finished with a 22-60 record last year, the second-worst mark in the NBA, and oddsmakers expect them to be one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference again in the upcoming season.

Reviews for "Orlando Magic Preseason Schedule: What to Expect"

1. John - 1 star
I recently had the opportunity to review the Orlando Magic 2022-23 schedule, and I have to say, I wasn't impressed at all. The schedule seemed to be filled with difficult matchups against strong teams, making it highly unlikely for the Magic to have a successful season. Additionally, the home game schedule was disappointing, with only a few marquee matchups that would be worth attending. Overall, I found the schedule to be quite underwhelming and not worth getting excited about as a Magic fan.
2. Sarah - 2 stars
As a devoted Orlando Magic fan, I was extremely disappointed by the 2022-23 schedule. It seemed like the team was handed an unfair and challenging lineup, with back-to-back games against top-tier opponents and a lack of rest days. This schedule doesn't seem to consider the players' well-being and doesn't set them up for success. Additionally, the away game schedule seemed incredibly unbalanced, with several lengthy road trips that could potentially fatigue the team. Overall, I believe the Orlando Magic deserved a better schedule that would allow them to showcase their potential and build a strong season.
3. Mike - 2 stars
The Orlando Magic 2022-23 schedule left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. The distribution of home and away games seemed uneven, with lengthy stretches of away games that would put a strain on the team's performance. The lack of Sunday home games was also a letdown for fans who work during weekdays and can only attend weekend games. Furthermore, the schedule lacked any high-profile matchups or exciting rivalries that could generate buzz and fill the arenas. Overall, it felt like the Magic got the short end of the stick with a lackluster schedule that doesn't showcase their potential or cater to the fans' interests.
4. Emily - 3 stars
The Orlando Magic 2022-23 schedule was fairly average in my opinion. It had its ups and downs, with a mix of challenging matchups and more winnable games. However, the schedule seemed lacking in terms of prime-time games and exciting matchups that would attract national attention. Additionally, the home game schedule had some notable gaps, with several home games clustered together followed by extended periods without any home fixtures. This made it difficult to plan attendance and support the team consistently. Overall, while not terrible, the schedule left room for improvement in terms of creating a more balanced and exciting season for both players and fans.
