The Texas Tech mascot program is an integral part of the university's spirit and traditions. The program, which began in 1949, is responsible for the selection and training of the official mascots for Texas Tech University, including the iconic Masked Rider and the live animal mascot, the Red Raider. The Masked Rider is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Texas Tech. The rider, dressed in black and red, rides a black horse known as Fearless Champion during football games and other special events. An endowment fund was created to offset the many expenses incurred by the rider each year as he or she travels over 14,000 miles and makes well over 170 public appearances a year, including out-of-town football games, rodeos, parades, school visits and ceremonies.
