Subjects alternately performed either a low-load (0-back) or high-load (3-back) version of the n-back task [24] while their brains were scanned using fMRI. As the subjects engaged in these tasks, controlled aliquots of either fruit juice (appetitive) or quinine hydrochloride (HCl) solution (aversive) were orally delivered during the inter-trial-interval.
