The Magic Sick Dora is a fascinating story about a young girl named Dora who possesses a unique ability—the power of magic. However, unlike the traditional portrayal of magic as a source of strength and wonder, Dora's magic is often a burden rather than a blessing. In this enchanting tale, Dora discovers her magical abilities at a young age. At first, she delights in the wonders she can create with a mere flick of her wrist. Flowers bloom instantaneously in her presence, objects float in midair, and animals obey her every command. But soon, Dora realizes that her magic comes with a price.
Yet it was racier than that. Richard Cavendish’s 1970 An Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Supernatural cites a man, Guillaume Edelin, who confessed to flying on a broom in 1453 as the first known reference to the act. Just a few years later, in 1456, emerged the mention of “flying ointment.” Either given by the devil or crafted by a witch, the potion allowed a human to take flight, likely for a trip to the Witches’ Sabbath.
Le Franc s long poem about virtuous women is interrupted by a discussion of witchcraft, and the covered heads of the two women marks them as Waldensians. No matter what your broom is made of, however, it should never be used for everyday housecleaning, as this would contaminate the sacred energy it holds for ritual and magical purposes.
But soon, Dora realizes that her magic comes with a price. Every time Dora uses her magic, she falls terribly ill. The more powerful the spell, the sicker she becomes.
Tools of Wiccan Ritual: the Broom (Besom)
Perhaps the most common (and commonly misunderstood) symbol of Witches and Witchcraft in popular culture, the broom has been part of pagan custom around the world for centuries, and has an affinity with modern Wiccan practices. It’s unclear just how the idea of Witches flying around on broomsticks originated, but many people believe this to be a mistaken interpretation of astral projection, which some Witches in past centuries would use psychoactive herbs to facilitate. Sometimes called “flying ointments,” these concoctions were likely the source of the confusion. I was really disappointed with "The Magic Sick Dora". The plot was confusing and hard to follow, and the characters lacked depth.
