BALTIMORE — Police have identified a woman whose remains were found inside an abandoned container on Liberty Heights Avenue, earlier this month.

Versey Spell, 75, had been missing since October 2022.

Last November WMAR spoke with Versey's sister, Bettea Brown-Wilson, who was one of the last to hear from her.

“We had went out for her doctor’s appointment and came back, had dinner. My husband took her home and that’s the last anybody had seen her,” Brown-Wilson told WMAR reporter Brittney Verner.

Brown-Wilson grew more suspicious of her sister's disappearance when she received a startling call five days later.

“[Versey's] landlord sent her brother to the house to check on my sister and the house, and the house had been broken into upstairs and downstairs and my sister was missing from the house,” said Brown-Wilson. “They just destroyed her apartment completely, everything was all over the place."

But, that's not all of what was discovered at the house. Someone was actually still inside, sleeping in Versey's bed.

“He asked who are you, and she said who are you, and he said you don’t live here and she said my friend brought me here, and he said your friend, this is my sister’s house, get out of her bed," said Brown-Wilson. And she just jumped up, pushed him and ran out the front door."

There were however some signs left of Versey.

According to Brown-Wilson, Versey was disabled and required a cain or walker to get around. Those items were left behind in her house, which is located in the 3900 block of Barrington Road.

“It’s not like she’s going to walk anywhere or go with anybody because we are close knit family, and if she need a ride I will take her, my daughter will take her, somebody would take her and she wouldn’t go off with nobody,” Brown-Wilson said.

Despite her disability, Versey still worked as a Camden Yards usher following a career with the VA.

After she was reported missing, police issued a sliver alert for Versey while her family distributed flyers seeking tips from the community.

Brown-Wilson even held a vigil for Versey last November, months before her body was discovered.

Police have not revealed any potential motive or suspects in the case as of this writing.

The Orioles have reacted to Versey's death by issuing this statement.

"We are saddened to hear of the passing of long-time Orioles usher, Versey Spell. Our Orioles family sends heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. We will miss her warm welcomes at the ballpark."

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100. Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a $6,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Family of Versey Spell, Oriole Park greeter, pleads for action as reward offered in murder investiga 01:54 BALTIMORE -- A $6,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the murder of 75-year-old Versey Spell. Spell, who was reported missing in October 2022, was found to be dead last March. Bettea Brown Wilson, Versey's sister, told WJZ that the past few months have been horrifying for her, and she hopes this reward will encourage someone with information to come forward. "I've been in a lot of trauma," Wilson said. "It's been a long time since October 2022." Her remains were found in a container in Northwest Baltimore, police said.

Around 5:37 p.m. on March 3, officers responded to the 3900 block of Liberty Heights Avenue after a request for police assistance. When they arrived, they were told that there was a black container containing possible human remains in the curtilage of the 3900 block of Garrison Boulevard. The remains were transported to the Medical Examiners' Office for an autopsy, and homicide was notified. On March 21, the medical examiner confirmed the identification.

Spell, a retired federal employee who had been working as an Oriole Park greeter, disappeared under suspicious circumstances. According to her family, they found Spell's doors were forced open and the house in disarray. The relatives said Spell was not in the home, but her cane, walker and other health-related items were still there. Her glasses and other personal items were found outside of the home. "It's really been devastating, you know, to have your sister taken from you like that and then to find her in the condition she was found in," Wilson said. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP. "If anybody knows anything about what happened, please let the police department know. We would be oh so grateful," Wilson said. Spell's sister is also asking for the police to do more to bring the person or people responsible to justice. "What have y'all been doing? Have y'all been searching the neighborhood? Have y'all been going door to door? A lot of people in the neighborhood say the police never came to their door to ask them anything," Wilson said.

'It's just heartbreaking': Sister of Versey Spell speaks out amid tragic discovery

BALTIMORE — On Tuesday, WMAR-2 News told you about 75-year-old Versey Spell, who's body was found less than a mile from her home almost 6 months after she went missing.

Spell's sister, Bettea Brown-Wilson, believes she may have been one of the last family members to have spoken with her.

Wilson said although this news was extremely hard to digest this brings them one step closer to finding out who and why someone killed Spell.

"Five months, three weeks. Why would somebody want to take her? I just don't understand," Bettea said.

More than five months is how long Bettea said it has been since her family has waited to learn new information about her sisters disappearance.

"We knew that it would be this way after five months but, when reality sets in, it's just heartbreaking," Bettea said.

She said for the past five months she never gave up hope that her sister would be found. Spell went missing in October of 2022.

In early March, police called Bettea after finding a container with remains believed to be Spell a few blocks from where she was last seen. Officers later confirmed it was.

“He asked me a bunch of questions about my sisters hair, finger nails, any operations, stuff like that and I told him. I was hoping that they would bring her back home safe as she left. But, after three months because she had lupus real bad, so without her medicine, she wasn’t any good. I’m numb, hurt, disappointed, angry. I don’t know anybody who would want to really hurt her you know,” Bettea said.

Now her family is left expecting what feels equally painful which is the unknown.
