The year 2020 will go down in history as a time of unprecedented challenges and uncertainty. The world witnessed the outbreak of a global pandemic that brought nations to a standstill and shook the foundations of our societies. Amidst this chaos, there was another phenomenon that seemed to gain strength – the rise of the occult. In the realm of the occult, practices and beliefs center around supernatural forces, magic, and hidden knowledge. While occultism has always existed in some form throughout history, the year 2020 saw a renewed interest and fascination with these esoteric practices. One reason for this resurgence in the occult may be attributed to the general feeling of fear and anxiety that permeated the global consciousness in 2020.
Really nothing more to say to expand on my prior review except that I enjoyed this just as much the second time! It's honestly a very cozy horror? If I can call it that?? I would put in a similar ballpark to something like The Vast of Night in terms of cultivating an atmosphere that is simultaneously sort of warm and familiar (largely due to the analog touches) while also being quite sinister. It just has a really measured pace, some nice little references, and lovely cinematography which struck me all the more this time as I was scrubbing through it following my rewatch in order to make the next alternate poster for my I done hyperfixated list. Another thoughtfully made film that does a lot with a little (though, because I am a grump - I still do not forgive the CGI!!).
