Netflix Reveals European Slate of Animated Films and Series

As part of its Geeked Week animation reveals, and as a lead-in to next week’s Annecy 2022 festival, Netflix has announced a new slate of animated features and series from European creators and production houses, adding to its extensive, growing list of animated titles.

Here’s the latest set of new projects:

Animated Feature Films:

Ember (Spain)

From the BAFTA award-winning and Academy Award-nominated Klaus director, Sergio Pablos and The SPA Studios, the hand-drawn Ember is billed as an epic adventure tale of humankind’s quest for fire told through the eyes of young Dikika who embarks on an impossible race to a distant volcano to retrieve the precious spark that will save her tribe. No release date was announced.

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (UK)

Produced by Timeless Films and Axis Studios, and directed by Stephen Donnelly, the CG animated film reimagines Charles Dickens' ageless classic in a supernatural, time-travelling, musical adaptation of the definitive Christmas story. With his very soul on the line, Scrooge has but one Christmas Eve left to face his past and build a better future. It features re-imagined songs from the two-time Academy Award winner Leslie Bricusse OBE. Scheduled release is December 2022.

That Christmas (UK)

Based on the successful series of children's books by BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, Yesterday), Locksmith Animation’s upcoming CG animated film marks the feature film directorial debut of renowned character animation and story artist veteran Simon Otto (How to Train Your Dragon trilogy). That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about love and loneliness, family and friends, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys! Nicole P. Hearon (Moana, Frozen) and Adam Tandy (The Thick of It, Detectorists) produce.

Untitled Steve Box Animated Film (France)

From Academy Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-winning Director Steve Box (Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were Rabbit) and SUPERPROD Animation, comes a yet to be titled, all original CG animated family comedy heist movie. In the film, as they struggle to feed themselves with the proceeds of their ever-inventive, but low-yield heists, Tibbles and his rag-tag gang of stray cats are forced to go undercover to pull of the biggest heist of their lives, posing as the thing they most despise – the pampered pets of suburbia.

Animated Series:

Bad Dinosaurs (UK/ Spain)

Bad Dinosaurs is the debut animated series from Snafu Pictures. The CG animated show, a high-octane thrill ride through the Mesozoic, follows the shenanigans of a Tyrannosaurus family as they deal with the trials of life in the prehistoric wilderness, while surrounded by incompetent dinosaurs. Based on a series of successful online shorts co-created by animation veteran Joel Veitch, the show will be animated by Able & Baker (Love Death & Robots, Dragon Rider), and directed by multi award winning Simone Giampaolo.

Mermaid Magic (Italy)

From multi-award winning creator and director Iginio Straffi (WinxClub) and Emmy award-winning animation studio Rainbow/Bardel (Rick and Morty, Dragon Prince), together with acclaimed head writer, Rich Burns (Spirit Riding Free), the CG animated series tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Merlinda who leaves her undersea world for the unknown land above to track down a rare source of magic that will help her take on the evil forces above the waves and below that seek to destroy her kingdom.

The Seven Bears (France)

According to the streamer, “Forget the Seven Dwarfs… here come the Seven Bears! So, look out Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White, because this lovable pack of furballs is putting a fuzzy twist on the fairytales we thought we knew.” Based on the acclaimed graphic novels by Emile Bravo, the CG animated series is produced by the award-winning Animation Studio Folivari, with CG animation by Cube. Robert Vargas serves as showrunner.

Wereworld (UK)

Based on the books by Curtis Jobling, Wereworld is a CG animated fantasy adventure series that follows Drew Ferran, as he comes of age and discovers he's the last of a long line of Werewolves, and rightful (yet reluctant) ruler of a land governed by Werelords. Drew must fight to abolish the tyranny of the Lionlords and reclaim the throne. The series is directed by Tom Brass for Jellyfish Pictures and produced by Angelo Abela, Tim Compton, Curtis Jobling, and Barry Quinn for Lime Pictures.

Dan Sarto is Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Animation World Network.

Netflix EMEA’s head of animated series departs

Alexi Wheeler has resigned as head of animated series at Netflix EMEA, which has significantly restructured its animation team.

Until recently, the streamer operated just one team that focused on animated content for both kids and adult audiences. But it has now been split into two by demo to better support creators, according to the company. Wheeler’s departure is the only personnel change related to the move, says Netflix, adding that it remains committed to cultivating animation in the EMEA region.

Wheeler joined Netflix EMEA in 2018 as director of kids and family content, and was promoted three years later to head of animated series. During his time at the streamer, he shepherded projects including Aardman short film Robin Robin and series such as Heartstopper (See-Saw Films) and Big Tree City (Blue Zoo).

Upcoming kids shows in the platform’s regional pipeline include Snafu Pictures’ Bad Dinosaurs (UK), Folivari’s The Seven Bears (France) and Rainbow’s Mermaid Magic (Italy). Netflix’s first animated series from Africa, Supa Team 4, also launches in the region on July 20 as part of a global rollout.

“After nearly five years at Netflix, my time at the streamer has come to an end,” Wheeler said in a LinkedIn post earlier today. “I’ll be taking a break over the summer to spend time with my family, but am already excited to see where this open path leads me next, and I look forward to working with many of you in the future.”

15+ Years of Animation Experience in TV, Games Dev, Feature Film for studio like Ubisoft & Weta. Making animations for Pre-visualizations, Gameplay, Cinematics & VFX. Building Tools and Scripts for simplifying workflows

Trying New Things Is Essential For Your Success 🚀 I’ve been trying out this new tool called Ragdoll Dynamics. It’s a real-time physics solver in Autodesk Maya. It behaves similar to the physics solver in a game engine. The big difference is that you can adjust things to get the behaviour you want unlike in a game engine. It is fun doing the tutorials while getting to understand better how the tools can be used. As animator, I can find so many uses to this like replacing lot of overlap motions (tail movements, dead bodies, etc) and object animation (explosion, collision, etc). It can replace things like armor pieces from the Elites in Halo, it would have been much easier to animate it with this tool. ❗ Trying new things can be fun especially if it can help set you up for success. Give new tools or workflow a chance and see if this can benefit you in the long run. Vice President - Games. Psyop. LA/NYC/Berlin/Mexico City

New Work! The latest collaboration between our rockstar partners Golden Wolf and Psyop has resulted in this, another cracking #Brawlstars movie for Supercell. The Last Stand is the fourth in a series that has now amassed over 570 million views on #YouTube. Check out: Piper's Sugar and Spice, Barley's Last Call, No Time To Explain and My Sweet Brawlentine. https://lnkd.in/ek_8wY7Y This time around, please be introduced to 8-BIT. He might look like a super-cute, arcade machine; but with his long-range fricken lasers, he’s actually a dangerous, high-damage little dude. On the flip side, he’s slow-moving and easy to catch. A bit like myself, some might say. Love this from the #YouTube comments: "Pam tries to rob Edgar, got hit by a guitar, broke into Brock’s house, threw him out the window, almost successfully robbed a bank, failed to STONKS, tried to threaten a sniper bot, got killed, came back from the dead, punched Mortis, parkoured on top of millions of bots and inserted a coin into 8-Bit, all in ten seconds." Season of the witch parents guide

Those who wear the amulet are believed to gain the ability to communicate with wolves, understanding their language and commanding them. Throughout history, many have sought the amulet of the wolf king in hopes of harnessing its power. It is an object of desire and fascination, as it promises greatness and dominance to those who possess it. However, the amulet is said to be guarded by powerful enchantments and protected by the spirits of the wolves themselves. Some say that only one with a pure heart and noble intentions can truly wield the power of the amulet. Others claim that it will corrupt and consume those who seek power for selfish reasons. Regardless, the amulet remains a symbol of strength, leadership, and the qualities embodied by the legendary wolf king. The amulet of the wolf king has become a source of inspiration for many tales, songs, and artworks. It has captured the imagination of people throughout time, representing the desire for power, wisdom, and the connection with nature. Whether it exists in reality or simply in the realm of legends, the amulet remains a symbol of the noble and primal spirit of the wolf king..
