The unofficial patch is the main "mod" everyone should download to avoid some crashing bugs that can occur as well as balancing the game better.

Unofficial Patch was de-facto standart for years. Better balance much more content. If you want completelly different game you can try "Brave New World" and "Dwiggs". Maps penty of them on heavengames.
