REVIEW | The Worst Witch Live

In a world where we are often defined by where we have come from and how talented we are, the story of Mildred Hubble is a refreshing reminder of the unique power that is within each of us – despite our upbringing, talents, looks or outward ability! It is a wonderful inspiration for every little girl (and boy) and an adventure of friendship, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

I remember with fondness The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy – they brought mischief and adventure to bedtimes and stole me away into a world of mishap and magic. This timeless classic is now touring the UK as a live magical and musical extravaganza and is currently showing in Hull!

Last night I was excited to be able to catch these trainee witches, their passionate teachers and an evil twin sister with Megan by my side, at it’s opening night at Hull New Theatre. It began with a meet and greet from cast members and ended with a clap along finale, and together we had a lovely evening.

Accident-prone Mildred Hubble, is an ordinary girl who finds herself in an extraordinary place when she inadvertently falls (literally) in with a crowd of trainee witches all set to attend Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches.

Unprepared and a little intimidated by this new world (and never quite grasping the witches code or potion formulas) she soon finds herself acquainted with friends like she’s never had before, a cat sidekick called “Tabby” and an opportunity of a lifetime – to stay and learn the art of witchcraft! Unfortunately this seemingly heartwarming tale soon takes a twist as jealous Ethel is set on sabotaging this “imposter” and with various spells and deceit she goes head to head with clumsy Mildred Hubbard, leaving a trail of mayhem as they go.

But Mildred faces a greater danger than that of Ethel Hallow and in the 2nd half courage, loyalty and teamwork take precedence as they find themselves at the centre of a battle that’s being fought for their future.

From flying lessons to spells and from cat training to chants, this stage adaptation it is a fun and magical tale of friendship, tenacity and a world filled with impossibilities. The show features magic, puppetry, original music and plenty of Mildred’s unique brand of utter pandemonium. We thoroughly enjoyed it and were truly impressed with the magic, whit and beautiful message of friendship, self belief and breaking the mold!

Everyone was fabulous and Megan especially loved the magic, mirror illusions, music and chaos. But most of all, she loved the accompanying kittens and couldn’t leave without one of her very own – keeping the magic going all the way home!
