Ac Rock : Acappellago

The second CD from this Chicago foursome (plus guest percussionist), who like rock and still admit to it. In fact, they even perform rock songs on this CD! Yes, INXS, Grand Funk Railroad and Cheap Trick fall victim to the AC (pronounced "Aack") Rock onslaught. Even "Vehicle," a seventies rock anthem written by Jim Peterik (of cult favorites "Ides of March" and later of eighties AOR band Survivor), receives the AC treatment, complete with an actual guitar solo played by Jim himself! What's more, AC Rock are fine singers, they're tight, and they're in tune. To prove it, and to refute any aspersions that may exist about their musicality, the group includes Seal's "Kiss From A Rose," the Beach Boys "409" and the Hollies "Bus Stop," and even "Istanbul" for you jump swingers. (Actually, we have it on good authority that members of AC Rock received serious musical educations, but we'll never tell!) Party on!

Songlist: Istanbul, Come Go With Me, Because, Vehicle, I Want You To Want Me, Bus Stop, It's For You, Kiss From A Rose, Need You Tonight, 409, Coconut, Witch Doctor , Some Kind Of Wonderful

Moosebutter : Udder Won

There they were, 4 young guys from Utah at one of the daytime West Coast Summit "showcase concerts," in white headbands, red polyester running pants and black windbreakers, singing "Captain Organic Vegetable Man" and "Star Wars." That night they were invited to do some of their set at the big Summit concert at Marin Veterans Auditorium, and the crowd went nuts. Segue to May, 2003, another Saturday night on the same stage--the Harmony Sweeps Finals, where Moosebutter came in second only because The Idea of North could have beaten a choir of angels that night. Although they're not our type, we loved Moosebutter from the beginning, and have played their 1st CD, "See Dee," until "Psycho, the Musical" sounds like Alvin & the Chipmunks. Their long-awaited 2nd CD, "udder won" is now safely installed in our boombox. 15 manic songs, like "Uncle Earl's Hairpiece," the deeply romantic "The Valentine's Day Song," "Harry Potter" (sung to the tune of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman"), "I Hate Mosquitoes," "Rubber Monkey," "Hicksville, parts 1 and 2," "Jon Boy Jon," a particularly crazed " Witch Doctor " and the never-ending "Squirrels" (In My Nose). "Udder won" (which we think refers to the fact that they had one "See Dee" and this, obviously, is the "udder won"), is funny, bizarre, weird, brilliant and totally bananas. Our theory centers on something in the Utah water, and we'll take a six-pack!

Songlist: Convocation, Uncle Earl's Hairpiece, The Valentine's Day Song, Sarah, Harry Potter, I Hate Mosquitos, Midnight musings upon completeing the works of Byzantine philosopher Johannes Philoponus, Act II, scene iii, Still the Shortest, Rubber Monkey, Doug, Hicksville pt. 1, Jon Boy Jon, Hicksville pt. 2, Witch Doctor , Squirrels

Witch doctor songs

David Seville, whose real name was Ross Bagdasarian, was the creator of Alvin And The Chipmunks, a group made up of three animated chipmunks, which were really human voices pitched up to make them sound like small furry creatures.

Seville got the vocal effect by recording his voice into a tape recorder that was slowed to half speed and then playing it back at normal speed. "Witch Doctor" was his first song to use the technique, and at that point there were no "Chipmunks." (The squeaky voice was the witch doctor and had no physical form - Seville hadn't created the characters yet and used his own name for the recording).

Seville was a successful songwriter by the time he released this track as his first single - he had written the Rosemary Clooney hit "Come on-a My House" and a popular instrumental called "Armen's Theme."

"Witch Doctor" was a huge hit, going to US #1 in April 1958 and staying for three weeks. Soon after, Seville created three distinct voices and branded his act "The Chimpmunks." Later that year, he released "The Chipmunk Song" which went to #1 for four weeks and became a Christmas favorite. Alvin And The Chipmunks got their own TV show (The Alvin Show) in 1961, again in 1983 (Alvin and the Chipmunks), and once again in 2015 (ALVINNN. and the Chipmunks). Several movies have also appeared, starting with The Chipmunk Adventure in 1987.

This song is the story of a gentleman seeking some help from a witch doctor in order to impress a woman he has fallen in love with. The wise witch doctor offers some words of advice in order to help the gentleman win the woman's heart by saying, "Oo ee, oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang." It was said to be a call for love.

Sha Na Na recorded this, as did a Danish pop group known as Cartoons. Devo also covered it for the 1998 Rugrats Movie. Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo worked on the music for the film. >>

While it's quite a stretch to think of this tune as R&B, it was a #1 R&B hit. Many R&B chart toppers of the day were comedic or novelty recordings, including "Get A Job" by The Silhouettes and "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters.

Seville got the idea for this song from a story called Duel with a Witch Doctor, which was written by Jan de Hartog and published in Reader's Digest Condensed Books in 1957.

Some of the many uses of this song in the media include the TV shows The Simpsons and The Muppet Show, and the movie Homeward Bound.

"Witch Doctor" was #1 for three weeks in 1958, but it wasn't even the biggest novelty hit of the year. That honor went to "The Purple People Eater" by Sheb Wooley, which was at the top for six weeks. Later that year, 18-year-old Joe South had a minor hit with "The Purple People Eater Meets The Witch Doctor," combining the characters from the two songs. South went on to have a hit with "Games People Play" and performed as a session musician on Simon & Garfunkel's Sounds Of Silence album.

Reviews for "Cultural Traditions: Witch Doctor Songs in Indigenous Communities"

1. Sarah - 2/5 stars
I found the witch doctor songs to be quite annoying and repetitive. The lyrics were simple and lacked depth, and the melodies were catchy but quickly became grating on my ears. While I understand that some might find them fun or nostalgic, personally, I did not enjoy listening to them. I prefer music with more substance and complexity.
2. Mike - 1/5 stars
I cannot express how much I disliked the witch doctor songs. They were obnoxious and mind-numbingly repetitive. The lyrics were senseless and made me question the state of the music industry. It baffles me that these songs gained any popularity at all. I would not recommend subjecting yourself to this torture.
3. Lisa - 2/5 stars
The witch doctor songs left me feeling underwhelmed and unimpressed. The simplistic nature of the melodies and lyrics failed to captivate me. I was expecting something more innovative and creative, but instead, I was left with mediocre songs that I quickly grew tired of. While I understand the appeal for some, I personally couldn't find any enjoyment in these tunes.
4. John - 1/5 stars
I have to say that the witch doctor songs were absolute garbage. The repetitive and annoying nature of these songs made me cringe every time they came on. I cannot fathom how anyone could genuinely enjoy this type of music. It lacks any depth or substance and feels like a lazy attempt to create catchy tunes. I would strongly suggest avoiding these songs at all costs.
