I was one of those freshmen who signed up for Glassblowing my first semester at Salem State. It was during my summer orientation, whoever was instructing the session that explained how to sign up for classes used the example,

“Say you want to take ‘Glassblowing’, you just click…” and a light bulb lit up in my mind. I was beyond excited. I had always loved creating art and the thought of working with a new medium of molten glass thrilled me.

Before my first semester was over I was addicted. I sought a way to design my own custom major that focused on becoming a professional glassblower…among many other things. My wish came true in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department (IDS). After months of planning and dreaming, and with the help of my fantastic advisor Barbara Tierney, I officially changed my major to what it is now, a combination of Art, Professional Writing, Business and Communications. Within my concentration of Art, glassblowing became a large focus of my studies and before I knew it, I was a junior with four semesters of Glassblowing experience under my belt.

Rachael at Witch Dr.

Last spring, fate may or may not have glided me right into a new opportunity as I longboarded downtown with my two friends to what is now known as Salem’s Witch Dr. One of my friends told me there was a Glassblowing studio and Art Gallery opening up in Salem and they were beginning their renovation that afternoon. I was ecstatic! It was just what Salem needed, and I agreed that we should pay the man a visit.

He told us to go to “the old Casablanca” on Lafyette St. near Wendy’s, so we did. Derek Arnold met us at the door of the used-to-be latino bar that had recently shut down, dressed like a carpenter, sporting a LOCAL420 T-shirt and a huge grin. “HEEEEEEEEY!” he chuckled, “C’MON IN GUYS!”. I remember feeling at that time, this was the beginning of something for me.

The Witch Doctors in front of their Shop

I didn’t waste any time after introductions. I mentioned to Derek that I was currently a glassblowing student at Salem State. Because I wanted to be a part of his dream, I offered to lend them a voluntary hand anytime they needed me. They welcomed me to the team with open arms and I was there helping during their construction phase and painting the now purple window panes. Since they’ve opened in June this past summer, I’ve worked there a few days behind the counter. We’ve agreed to consider my position at the Witch Dr. more of an apprenticeship than anything for the time being, but I intend on contributing more to the business as I get closer and closer to graduating from Salem State. Establishing myself at a place to practice the skills for which I’ve been studying at Salem State, is something I’d definitely say I’m proud of.

The Witch Dr. is located at 109 Lafyette St. in downtown Salem. Co-owners Derek Arnold and the glassblowing artist commonly known as “PC” grew up together in Rockport and lived within a mile of each other until the age of 16. As the two got older, PC began blowing glass at Smokerings, a smokeshop and glassblowing studio in Seabrook, NH. While he was there, Derek was in Gloucester creating a business known as Local 420 a small merchandising company. Derek was asked a lot by customers about if he were ever going to sell glass pipes and through that inquiry he decided to give his old friend PC a call and they began discuss going into business together.

The two of them noticed, while grabbing a few drinks at Los Amigos that Casablanca was for lease and with that they decided “Pretty much on a whim” that this would be where they would build their dream together. The Witch Dr.’s soft opening was June 1st this past summer and their Grand Opening was this past fall, Septemper 15th, the same weekend as the Boston Freedom rally (which I myself was able to attend and represent the Witch Dr.)

Word about this new business spread around the City of Salem, creating some tension with some locals due to the fact they sold glass pipes. In the beginning of August 2012, the Witch Dr. was shut down with no due process for nearly a week, issued by the Mayor herself. Chief Tucker of Salem came to the conclusion that they were in their legal rights and The Witch Dr. was back open as soon as possible. The Witch Dr. certainly lost some revenue in those six days they were shut down but chose to let it go due to their easy-going attitude, as they realize the situation could have ended much worse.

The reputation of the Witch Dr. only seems to grow more and more since their opening this past summer. They have created strong alliances with other successful businesses in Salem such as The Howling Wolf, Front Street Coffee Shop and 43 Church. The Witch Dr. also features different deals on their facebook page at least once a week and they give %20 off to students who bring in proof of good grades, as they proudly support their customers who seek higher education.

Aside from their spectacular weekly deals, the Witch Dr. exemplifies their generosity by conducting raffles in support of various causes. Their first raffle this past fall they raised over $1,300 to the organization “Compassionate Care” which is a nonprofit organization based out of Falmouth that offers individualized support to those currently living with ALS. The winner of the raffle received a beautiful and intricate $800 glass oil rig called “Jungle Boogie” made by the glass artist Ukiah.

Raffle winner with prize

This February, Derek Arnold started a raffle to raise money for his good friend Phil, an artist, who is currently fighting his second wave of cancer. The Dr.’s raised $800 for the “Fight for Phil” cause and gave away numerous prizes including another expensive and beautiful oil rig made by the artist SNIC, two glass and metal spiders in which Phil made himself and donated to the Witch Dr. when it opened. Other winners received a leather love seat that was also donated to the Dr. by a friend and numerous pieces of art the Dr. bought from various local artists.

Fight for Phil Raffle Prizes

The Witch. Dr is not only a place in which glass art is created and sold, but they usually have their walls filled with paintings belonging to different local artists. They’ve even conducted galleries to support these local artist that are run after store hours and include free food, beverage and entertainment.

Art on the Walls

It’s safe to say this place is certainly one-of-a-kind, and I feel very fortunate to have become involved with such an establishment. but you’ll have to go check it this wonderful place to see for yourself. While you’re there, get a photo in the infamous casket and tell them Rachael sent you, you may even get a discount!

Rachael DePersia is in charge of Publicity at Red Skies and is, of course, a fan of glassblowing.

Reviews for "Witch Dr Glass and the Astral Plane: Navigating Other Realms"

1. Jane - 2/5: I wasn't a fan of Witch Dr Glass. The storyline felt weak and disjointed, with too many subplots that didn't lead anywhere. The characters lacked depth and development, making it difficult to connect with any of them. Additionally, the writing style was confusing and overly descriptive, often losing me in unnecessary details. Overall, I found it to be a confusing and unsatisfying read.
2. Mike - 1/5: Witch Dr Glass was one of the worst books I've read in a long time. The plot was convoluted and had too many unnecessary twists that only served to confuse the reader. The characters were uninteresting and lacked any redeeming qualities. The pacing was also off, with the story dragging on in some parts and rushing through key moments in others. I found myself struggling to finish this book and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
3. Sarah - 2/5: Witch Dr Glass had potential, but it fell flat for me. The concept was intriguing, but the execution was poor. The world-building was haphazard and inconsistent, leaving me with more questions than answers. The dialogue also felt forced and unnatural, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. Despite some promising moments, the overall experience left me disappointed.
4. Tom - 1/5: I cannot express how much I disliked Witch Dr Glass. The writing was subpar, riddled with clichés and lackluster prose. The characters were one-dimensional and unrelatable, making it impossible for me to care about their fates. The pacing was also poorly managed, with the story dragging on in some parts and rushing through others. This book was a complete waste of my time and I would strongly advise others to avoid it.
