The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, fourteen of them women, and five of them men. Additionally, one man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death with heavy stones for refusing to enter a plea. In total, there were 185 individuals accused of witchcraft during the trials. Some of these individuals were arrested and imprisoned, while others were tried and convicted. Many of those who were accused were residents of Salem Village, which is now known as Danvers, Massachusetts.
