    BUSINESS BEAT: McKenna’s Magic; Thirft Sale; Birthday Treatment; Anniversary Mixer

    Brian Gillis’s slight-of-hand magic tricks are something you have to see to believe.

    That’s why McKenna’s on the Bay is featuring Gillis, as well as “body magic and mind reading” by magician Sisuepahn, during a special wine dinner event on Sept. 15. The event includes an intimate wine reception and appetizers with the magicians, as well as a private dinner followed by a complete magic act.

    Gillis, whose card magic and coin tricks make anyone do a double-take, has a lot up his sleeves – if he happens to be wearing any. Also, he has figured out a way to manipulate sugar packets, paper money and reveal some of his audience members’ secrets (such as the name of their first pet).

    “I’m the best I’ve ever seen,” Gillis half-jokes. Backing up that sentiment, he has been nominated 10 times for the Magician of the Year award by the Academy of Magical Arts, appeared on “The Tonight Show” several times and was named “World’s Best Close-Up Magician for the New Millennium” during a World Magic Awards television special.

    He said he found his passion for magic when he worked as a junior high school teacher and needed to find a way to get his students’ attention. Those magic tricks blossomed into a new career for Gillis, who performs regularly at Los Angeles-area venues such as the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

    His partner, Sisuepahn, is a petite woman who encourages her burliest audience members to try to pick her up or move her during shows, but she won’t budge. She also is known for reading minds.

    Tickets (including dinner) to McKenna’s on the Bay’s Magic Duo Wine Dinner are $65. Reservations are required; space is limited. Call 342-9411. The reception beings at 7 p.m., with the after-dinner magic show starting at 9 p.m.

    Event organizers said this may be the first of a series of magic dinner shows at McKenna’s, which is located at 190 Marina Drive in Alamitos Bay Landing.

    Thrift Sale

    The annual September Blow-Out Sale is underway at the AIDS Assistance Foundation Thrift Store on Fourth Street’s Retro Row. Everything must go, to clear the way for the store’s Halloween Costume & Vintage Clothing Sale.

    All clothes, shoes and bags are 50% through today, Thursday, then it is all clothes, shoes and bags for $1 for a week until Thursday, Sept. 15, then the items are free until the 22nd.

    Whatever leftovers remain by Sept. 22 will be donated to homeless people living on Skid Row, said Paul Brindley, Assistance Foundation outreach coordinator and board member.

    “After Sept. 23, the store closes for a week so that we can reopen seven days a week through Oct. 31,” said Brindley, adding that October is the best sales month for the organization all year.

    Purchases made at the AIDS Assistance Foundation Thrift Store benefit men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in the Long Beach area.

    Kicking off the Halloween sale, there will be a special launch party from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 30, where the public can donate $10 and get first access to costumes and vintage items for sale. The event includes light appetizers and refreshments.

    “For a $10 tax-deductible donation, they get first pick of the costumes, jewelry, shoes, bags and more,” Brindley said.
