Monk Vs. Black Magic: Examining the Intrigue in 'Mr. Monk and the Curse of Black Magic

By admin

In the episode "Mr Monk and the curse of black magic," the famous detective Adrian Monk finds himself caught up in a perplexing case involving a curse and the world of black magic. While Monk is known for his rational thinking and skepticism, he is forced to confront the possibility of supernatural forces as he investigates a series of strange occurrences. The main idea of this episode is Monk's journey to uncover the truth behind the alleged curse and solve the mystery. Throughout the episode, Monk encounters a group of people who believe in the power of black magic, led by a self-proclaimed witch doctor. Their belief in curses and their willingness to take drastic actions to protect themselves adds a layer of suspense to the storyline. Monk, on the other hand, remains skeptical and uses his keen powers of observation and deductive reasoning to search for a more rational explanation.

"I Would Do That in a Second": Suits Creator on Possible Prequel Series

Creator Aaron Korsh is delighted by the current Suits-aissance on streaming and shares his thoughts on continuing the story.

It's not hyperbole to say that this has been the summer of Suits, with the USA Network series (which ran for nine seasons) finding a massive new audience on streamers such as Peacock. According to Nielsen’s streaming data, from July 17 to 23, Suits set a new record for an acquired title, attracting a massive 3.9 billion viewing minutes across streaming platforms. To translate, that's the most viewing minutes ever in one measurement week. And it's since remained at the top of Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 with 20 billion viewing minutes over the past six weeks.

No one is more shocked and pleased than Suits creator Aaron Korsh, who recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter for a two-part interview about the impact the series is having on current streaming viewers. Asked why he thought the premise and characters were resonating now, Korsh said: "I think the characters and the underlying base optimism are why people are connecting to the show, and then maybe some of it is tonal because it has drama but also it has humor."

The legal drama makes it easy for new viewers to get immersed in its case-of-the-week format, but it also features a compelling ensemble cast of quirky characters who draw the audience into their personal dramas, especially Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who is not a lawyer but pretty much scams his way into the job as an associate working for powerful attorney Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht).

Korsh and his writers got to make 134 episodes of Suits across nine seasons, and had the rare knowledge from the network that the ninth season would be their last. As such, he said that they were able to craft a series ending that he was very "satisfied" with, in terms of getting to provide solid closure for all of their characters, especially Mike and Harvey.

Because of that, Korsh said in THR interview that he hasn't put much thought into a reboot of any kind for Suits. "If someone reached out and the cast was into it, I would consider it, if I could come up with something that excited me," he clarified. "But if I could wave a magic wand and get another show on the air, it wouldn’t be a continuation of Suits. Now, I know I’ve mentioned the [Robert] Zane prequel idea, I would do that in a second. I was really excited about that."

The Robert Zane character, played by Tony Award-nominated actor Wendell Pierce, was introduced in Season 2 as an esteemed lawyer and the father of Suits series regular Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle). Robert then became a recurring character on the series, appearing in 35 episodes up through the ninth season. His last appearance was in the Suits series finale, "One Last Con." Recently, Pierce finished a triumphant Broadway run playing Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman and will appear in the Starz drama Power Book III: Raising Kanan in December.

Whether Korsh and Pierce reunite to speak about that prequel remains to be seen but audiences, new and old, can watch their existing alchemy on all nine seasons of Suits on Peacock.

Reviews for "The Perfect Mix of Mystery and Magic in 'Mr. Monk and the Curse of Black Magic"

1. Emily - 2/5 stars - "I love the 'Mr. Monk' series, but 'Mr. Monk and the Curse of Black Magic' just didn't do it for me. The plot felt overly contrived and lacked the clever twists and turns usually associated with the show. Additionally, the portrayal of black magic and occult practices felt unrealistic and out of place in the otherwise grounded world of Monk. Overall, I found the episode to be a disappointing addition to an otherwise enjoyable series."
2. Michael - 1/5 stars - "I'm a huge fan of 'Monk,' but 'Curse of Black Magic' was a complete letdown. The whole concept of the curse and supernatural elements just seemed forced and out of touch with the show's usual detective format. The plot was predictable and the resolution felt rushed and unsatisfying. It's unfortunate to see such a beloved series take a misstep with this episode."
3. Samantha - 2/5 stars - "As a fan of the 'Monk' series, I had high expectations for 'Curse of Black Magic.' Sadly, it fell flat. The plotline felt overly convoluted and lacked the usual charm and wit that make the show so enjoyable. The attempts at incorporating black magic into the story felt forced and unnecessary. Overall, I was left disappointed and hoping for better episodes in the future."
4. David - 1/5 stars - "I've been a loyal viewer of 'Monk' for years, but 'Curse of Black Magic' was a huge disappointment. The supernatural elements felt out of place in a show that thrives on realism and grounded detective work. The plot was uninspired and lacked the usual cleverness and intrigue that defines 'Monk' episodes. I hope the series bounces back from this misstep and returns to its usual high standard."
