Little Roots

. at this big beautiful orchid! Just wow! I was at my orchid shop today with my roommate who needed a new pothos plant. I wanted to pick up a few pots and a couple phalaenopsis for an arrangement when this mutant beauty caught my eye. I had already decided not to get any orchids for myself since the vendor, a sweet korean lady, only had a few large cattleya hybrids and a tiny dendrobium aside from the usual aisles of phals. But as I picked out the last orchid for the arrangement, this Phalaenopsis Magic Art peeked her blooms at me and I was in love. Next to her was the normal Magic Art type but it just made this orchid stand out even further. My weakness for peloric orchids strikes again!

Now this is a beast of a phalaenopsis. Lola's blooms are quite large and span the palm of my hand. The leaves are long and thick, and while she's a healthy plant, she's just a bit big for my tastes. But the peloric trait in these flower is just irresistible. Of the four flowers currently in bloom, two of them show this streaking on her main petals while the other two blooms have no streaks and are that lovely blush pink color throughout:

The difference in the flowers make this phalaenopsis absolutely charming and for those amazing, painted blooms I'm happy to keep her. I'm eager to see how the rest of the flowers on her display will look and another bonus of this plant is that she is a brancher! She already has a secondary branch on her flower spike that has four buds developing on it. I get a feeling this big girl will be putting on some amazing displays in the future!

Seedlings for Semi-Hydro Part II

More More More Seedlings Galore! A large chunk of my online ebay orders were from Carmela Orchids , based out of Hawaii. I stumbled upon their ebay page and ordered from there before finding out about the separate website, which is probably for the best. I'm starting to run out of space here at home! Uh-oh! This haul was all cattleya intergeneric seedlings so chances of lovely fragrances among the flowers will be high. Cattleya type orchids seem to be doing well for me in semi-hydro with little to no stress induced from repotting. With any luck, these seedlings will adapt well and continue to grow into healthy, mature plants under my care. Half of these orchids (Leona, Gloria, Verona) will be on a heat mat under an LED grow light supplemented with ambient sunlight from a nearby window. The other half of these orchids (Shinai, Tuscany, will be grown in front of a window without a heat mat. (none of the photos below belong to me, they were provided by the Ebay vendor as a

Sunset Valley Orchids: Open House 2018

A Return Trip to San Diego! The boyfriend and I took another lovely weekend trip to one of my favorite cities specifically so I could attend the annual Open House of one of my favorite nurseries, Sunset Valley Orchids. I already bought an impressive haul from them earlier this year and was told about the event. The trip was so much fun and I got to see some really beautiful plants. Here are the orchids I took home with me: *all pictures below are references from the website or from google Cattleya purpurata var carnea Talk about stumbling across a treasure! Here is an orchid I have on my wishlist and wasn't thinking I would find within budget anytime soon. I was quick to scoop up this species cattleya, despite the orchid not looking the greatest. This look like a seedling plant that has just reached or is reaching maturity. The bulbs are shriveled and the leaves are looking a bit leathery. I checked the roots and found them to be alright, even after quite a bit o
