PPG Says 'Paint It Black' With 2018 Color Forecasts

Dubbed the “most misunderstood neutral,” the “forgotten neutral” and the “new neutral,” one thing is for certain: PPG’s 2018 Colors of the Year picks are out, and the coatings company is telling consumers to go back in black.

PPG’s Olympic and Glidden brands, as well as PPG Paints, unveiled their picks as Black Magic, Deep Onyx and Black Flame, respectively.
Black Magic
A lighter shade that the company describes as both masculine and feminine, Black Magic is said to work as a standalone statement or work well accenting other colors, ranging from shades of gray, to pinks to whites.
Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager for Olympic and PPG paints, said that the decision for this shade matches a consumer trend that wants privacy.

“In past years, consumers have gravitated toward open, airy spaces that are thought to leave room for exposure,” said Schlotter. “However, in the current day, consumers often feel uneasy, restless or like their privacy is being invaded, so they crave deep, comforting colors that offer a welcomed escape from the chaos of daily life. Olympic paint’s Black Magic perfectly satisfies consumers’ desire for privacy.”
The company recommends using Black Magic as a home statement in areas like the front door, window trim, kitchen cabinets or exposed shelving.
Deep Onyx
A hue closest to the “standard” matte black, Deep Onyx is a way to get back to the basics, the company says.
“Using a black paint color like Deep Onyx on your walls or in your decor may feel intimidating at first, but it’s actually one of the easiest colors to use to create the low-key, easygoing style that’s trending for 2018,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager for Glidden paints. “Just like a little black dress, Deep Onyx is a classic, timeless staple.”

1. John - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with Ppg black nagic. The color payoff was extremely poor and it took several layers to even see a hint of the black color on my eyelids. Additionally, the formula felt very dry and chalky, making it difficult to apply. I was expecting a highly pigmented and smooth black eyeshadow, but this product fell short of my expectations.
2. Sarah - 1 star - I have to say, Ppg black nagic was a complete waste of money for me. The color was not even remotely black, but more of a grayish shade. It was patchy and didn't blend well on my eyelids, resulting in a messy and uneven look. The fallout was also excessive, leaving black specks all over my face. I would not recommend this eyeshadow to anyone.
3. Emily - 2 stars - I had high hopes for Ppg black nagic, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The pigmentation was lacking, and even after building up the color, it still looked muted on my eyes. The formula was also quite powdery, causing fallout during application. I expected a bold and intense black shadow, but this product just didn't deliver.
4. Mike - 2 stars - As someone who loves experimenting with different eyeshadow looks, I was really excited to try Ppg black nagic. However, I was quite disappointed with the quality of this product. The pigmentation was very sheer, and no matter how much I layered it, I couldn't achieve a true black shade. The texture was also very powdery and it didn't blend well, making it difficult to create a smooth and seamless look. Overall, I don't think I'll be reaching for this eyeshadow again.
5. Jennifer - 1 star - Ppg black nagic was a complete miss for me. The color was significantly lighter than expected and it lacked the depth and intensity I was looking for in a black eyeshadow. It was also very chalky and didn't adhere well to my eyelids, causing fallout and a messy application. I wouldn't recommend this product if you're seeking a true black eyeshadow.
