TheChirurgeon’s Road Through 2023, Part 19: GW US Open Tampa, Day 1

Welcome back, Dear Reader, to my ongoing journey through competitive Warhammer. Last Time around I talked about some final prep for Tampa, with a practice game and some hobby work. Today I’ll be talking about my games at the GW US Open in Tampa, and splitting the event across three articles – check back Thursday and Friday for the final two parts of the story.

The wife and I flew out to Tampa on Thursday night after dropping our son off with the grandparents for the weekend. I may bring him to Atlanta but that’s going to be six games over three days as opposed to eight, and with other stuff going on. For now, we’re taking advantage of my parents’ willingness to watch him and getting a little weekend away for ourselves. The missus doesn’t typically join on these trips, but she’ll come along every once in a while when I go somewhere interesting to her. She tends to do her own thing most of the day, and then we meet up in the evening for dinner and hang-outs.

The hotel is full so we’re staying at an Airbnb about 10 minutes’ drive away from the convention center and splitting the costs with my Goonhammer teammate, Norman. The place is alright; essentially it’s in the rennovated attic/top floor of an older house, and the inside ceilings are slanted to accommodate the roof. This extends to the apartment’s bathrooms, and it means when I’m standing in the shower I have to tilt my head 20 degrees to avoid hitting my head against the ceiling, which is hilarious but also it sucks.

I've seen kids running around the neighborhood wearing their witch capes, excitedly pretending to cast spells and fly on broomsticks. It's heartwarming to see how this simple costume piece can spark their imaginations and bring joy to their faces. The witch cape has also become a staple in Halloween events and parades in my area. People of all ages come together, decked out in their most enchanting capes, creating a vibrant and magical atmosphere. It's a time when everyone can embrace their inner witch and fully immerse themselves in the Halloween spirit. Overall, the witch cape in my area has become a symbol of Halloween festivities and creativity. It's fascinating to witness how a seemingly ordinary accessory can capture the imagination of so many people. Whether you're a child or an adult, the witch cape is a perfect way to add a touch of enchantment to any Halloween celebration..
