Everyday Magicians

“The provision of these original sources is a gift to historians and their students but also to modern magicians seeking working materials, and the authors’ analyses provide genuinely new insights into the nature of late medieval and early modern English magical practice.” —Ronald Hutton, author of The Witch: A History of Fear, from Ancient Times to the Present

Most of the women and men who practiced magic in Tudor England were not hanged or burned as witches, despite being active members of their communities. These everyday magicians responded to common human problems such as the vagaries of money, love, property, and influence, and they were essential to the smooth functioning of English society. This illuminating book tells their stories through the legal texts in which they are named and the magic books that record their practices.

In legal terms, their magic fell into the category of sin or petty crime, the sort that appeared in the lower courts and most often in church courts. Despite their relatively lowly status, scripts for the sorts of magic they practiced were recorded in contemporary manuscripts. J uxtaposing and contextualizing the legal and magic manuscript records creates an unusually rich field to explore the social aspects of magic practice.

Expertly constructed for both classroom use and independent study, this book presents in modern English the legal documents and magic texts relevant to ordinary forms of magic practiced in Tudor England. These are accompanied by scholarly introductions with original perspectives on the subjects. Topics covered include: the London cunning man Robert Allen; magic to identify thieves; love magic; magic for hunting, fishing and gambling, and magic for healing and protection.

Reviews for "The History of Witch Costumes: A Look at Ebay's Collection"

1. Sarah - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the eBay witch costume that I purchased. The quality was extremely poor and the fabric felt cheap and scratchy. The sizing was also way off - the dress was too big in some areas and too tight in others. Additionally, the seams were coming apart after just one use. I wouldn't recommend this costume to anyone looking for something decent and durable.
2. Mark - 1 star - This eBay witch costume was a total waste of money. The description made it seem like a great deal, but when I received it, I was shocked at how flimsy and poorly made it was. The stitching was uneven and threads were already unraveling. The accessories that came with it, like the hat and broom, were also very cheaply made and looked more like children's toys. I regret ordering this costume and would advise anyone considering it to find a better quality option elsewhere.
3. Jessica - 2 stars - I didn't have high expectations for a cheap eBay witch costume, but this one still managed to disappoint me. The fit was completely off - the dress was too short and tight, and the sleeves were oddly long. The material was uncomfortable and felt like it would rip easily. The included hat was so misshapen that I couldn't even wear it. Overall, this costume was a huge letdown and I'll definitely be looking for higher quality options in the future.
4. Mike - 2 stars - The eBay witch costume I bought was a huge disappointment. The fabric was thin and see-through, making it embarrassing to wear. The stitching was also coming undone in multiple places, and it felt like the costume would fall apart with any movement. The sizing was way off, as the dress was too big and didn't fit properly. I ended up having to spend even more money on alterations just to make it somewhat wearable. Save yourself the trouble and invest in a better quality costume.
