In the popular animated series "The Owl House," one of the main characters, Eda Clawthorne, is a powerful witch who has lost her magic. Eda, also known as the Owl Lady, is a rebellious and independent character who doesn't conform to traditional witch standards. However, due to a curse placed on her, she gradually loses control over her magic. Throughout the series, Eda's struggle to regain her magical abilities is a central plot point. She searches for a way to break the curse and restore her powers, as she believes her magic is an essential part of her identity. Eda's magic is not only her source of power, but it also represents her unique and unconventional nature.

“There were a ton of amazing milestones and accomplishments happening across all different sectors from entertainment, music, business, politics, academia, all over the board,” Andréa tells ESSENCE. “And when Robin and I were talking about how we wanted to show up at ESSENCE, we were thinking, What could we do to commemorate what is really turning into an amazing year for our community, and in particular Black woman?

They ve also branched out to do more than just selling amazing wines, creating events, clubs and opportunities to highlight Black culture, changemakers, and to center wine in all of it. They hope the path they ve been able to pave, and the SHE CAN fund, will make a way for more Black women winemakers to sprinkle their magic within a less than diverse industry.

Midweek Mixup: Black Girl Frosé

Let’s be real…Summer just doesn’t seem like summer without a frozen drink. Just make mine your best frosé and we’ll be all good. It gives me so much joy on a hot summer day!

Are frozen drinks your jam? If so, you probably love frosé too! Funny enough, I don’t typically love frozen drinks, and prefer them on the rocks. I think it’s really because I can drink them faster that way. Don’t judge me. Especially when I’m just here to help you get a good frozen drink in your life!

I Need a Moment

Saying this year has been one for the books is an understatement. I’ve been missing a lot, but focusing on finding pockets of joy in this new normal. One of the things I’m missing most is kicking it with my girls. Summers have been the backdrop for some of our most memorable moments, and I’m feeling a bit robbed of that this year. We would totally be drinking frosé in full kiki mode! Even though I’m missing them, we’ve been keeping the sistahood alive via group Facetimes, and group chats. Those virtual hugs, high fives, and LOLs are so damn magical. It’s just what we do.

One of the other things I’m finding joy in is the way we’ve rallied to support Black-owned businesses in the wake of the revolution. Black-owned brands are getting our dollars at every turn, and I’m loving supporting us. The McBride Sisters is just one of the BOBs that have become staples in our home this summer.

Now that you know the source of my inspiration for Black Girl Frosé, let’s get to the recipe!

What You Need

You can easily make frose at home with whatever blender you have. I used a Ninja Nutri blender, but totally would have pulled out my full size blender if I was making a larger batch. It all works.

I feel like the best frosés have a spirit, rosé wine, fruit, and a sweetener of some sort. I used Bombay Sapphire Gin, Black Girl Magic Rosé, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, frozen strawberries, lemon juice, honey, and ice.

My initial instinct was to use vodka, but I’m really trying with gin y’all. If you’ve read my post Impressed by Empress 1908 Gin, then you know I’m working on my aversion to gin. I swear, I will drink it until I love it. LOL

Don’t have the spirits you need? Drizly has you covered. Click the link, or use blapw at checkout and we both get $5 off an order!

The Drink Build

First things first, tell yourself you’ll only have two because you’ll want more than that! Or not!

Secondly, you dump everything in the blender and turn it on. Once everything has blended to your desired consistency, about 30 seconds or so, pour it into a glass. That’s it. The hardest part about this recipe is avoiding the tipsy brain freeze from drinking these too fast. Consider yourself warned.

D&S Tips

*My first batch was made sans sweetener, and while drinkable, it was missing something for me. However, feel free to leave it out if that’s your preference.

*Herbal simple syrups are amazing. I tried this with a basil simple syrup and it was too good! I may have gone back for a third.

*Last (and most important) tip, and it’s a life lesson really: There’s a bit of Black Girl Magic in everything good!

This will be one of the best frosés you’ll make. You won’t regret it…unless you end up with tipsy brain freeze, and even that regret is temporary. Tag @dashandstir if you make this, or your own special version. I love seeing your recreations!

When the McBride sisters, Robin and Andréa, first came up with the idea for Black Girl Magic Wines in 2018, it was at a time when actual Black girl magic was in full effect. In addition to wanting to honor the women in their family, they also wanted to tribute Black women, from Mayor LaToya Cantrell in New Orleans to countless other queens in different areas, who were making their mark that year and always in all ways. They also wanted to do it on the biggest stage for Black women — ESSENCE Festival.

Along the way, she faces many obstacles and battles against formidable enemies. Despite setbacks and moments of doubt, Eda's determination keeps her going. As the series progresses, Eda's understanding of magic deepens. She learns that true power comes from within, not just from external sources. This realization helps her become more in tune with herself and allows her to embrace her unconventional methods and abilities. Ultimately, Eda's efforts are rewarded, and she does regain her magical abilities. However, the process is not without sacrifices. To break the curse fully, she must confront her own vulnerabilities and confront her fears. Through her compelling character arc, Eda's journey to regain her magic in "The Owl House" explores themes of personal growth, self-acceptance, and the importance of staying true to oneself. It serves as a reminder that magic, while a powerful tool, is not the defining factor of one's identity and worth. Eda's story is a testament to resilience and the power of belief in oneself, reminding viewers that they too have the ability to overcome obstacles and find their own magic within..
