At Least A Half-Dozen New Christmas Stations Launched Today.

With Halloween in the rear-view mirror, a flurry of stations flipped the switch to all-Christmas music today – nearly eight weeks before the Yuletide holiday. Joining iHeartMedia soft AC “93.9 Lite FM” WLIT Chicago are Audacy AC “Magic 98.9” WSPA Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, which made the flip to holiday music at 5am this morning.

“By popular demand Magic 98.9 has officially launched into 100% Christmas music,” a station web post read. “Listeners and merchants have long embraced continuous Christmas music this time of year and Magic 98.9 is proud to oblige by bringing free holiday happiness with non-stop Christmas music all season long.”

Brand Manager Dave Jackson told WYFF-TV, "Christmas music lifts the community’s spirits and that just happens to be what we do best. Listening to continuous Christmas music on Magic 98.9 is a tradition for families and retailers all over the region."

Cumulus Media oldies “Z104” WWIZ Youngstown, OH was the first to go all-Christmas the last two years, jingling the bells on Oct. 1 last year and on Sept. 25 in 2020. This year, it makes the move a month later as “The Mahoning Valley’s Christmas Station” returned to the air at 12:25pm this afternoon.

“We get calls and emails every year from listeners asking when we’re flipping to Christmas 104,” OM Charley Connolly said in a release. “Today, their wish has been granted, and we hope people enjoy all the holiday feels and fun, now through New Year’s Day 2023.”

Also making the switch today is SummitMedia hot AC “Mix 106.9” WVEZ Louisville, KY; Bryan Broadcasting “Gospel 97.3” KAGC Bryan, TX (1510), which is simulcast on the Bryan-licensed translator K247CS at 97.3; iHeartMedia AC “Mix 99.5” WMAG Greensboro, NC; and Horizon Broadcasting hot AC “The Peak 104.1” KWPK Bend, OR.

Pillar of Fire contemporary Christian “Star 93.3” WAKW Cincinnati debuted its Christmas programming on Oct. 31 and is awarding Christmas Wishes to “local families who need a miracle this holiday season.” “Star 93.3” is the first station in the market to go all-Christmas music, and like it did last year, it beat Cumulus Media AC “Warm 98.5” WRRM to the punch.

While the trend used to be to wait until Thanksgiving week to flip the Santa switch, stations have been moving up the date. Last year year more than 80 iHeartMedia radio stations flipped to an all-Christmas music format on Nov. 5.

Bonneville AC KOSI Denver (101.1) will make the flip on Nov. 11, which will mark its 21st consecutive year of playing wall-to-wall holiday hits. “This year we thought it would be fun to make the switch to all Christmas music out at Park Meadows Retail Resort,” PD Jim Lawson said in a release. “I’m also excited to announce that we will have a contest where one lucky child will get to push the big red button with Santa to help launch KOSI 101.1 into Christmas music this year.” Listeners are encouraged to enter the contest at the radio station's website.

iHeartMedia AC “Magic 107.7” WMGF Orlando is also prepping its listeners for the annual flip to holiday music. According to ClickOrlando.com, “Magic 107.7” will make Christmas music appear on Friday, Nov. 11 at 8:25am and promises “a unique spin on the transition.”

A few days before KOSI and WMGF, Cumulus Media AC “Warm 103.3” York, PA will transition into holiday mode on Nov. 9. The station is asking listeners to vote on what the first Christmas song will be – “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams or “Christmas Eve Sarajevo” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Reviews for "Magic 104.1's Winter Wonderland of Music"

1. John - 2/5: I was really disappointed with Magic 104 1 holiday music station. The songs they played were repetitive and I felt like I was hearing the same tunes over and over again. The selection lacked variety and imagination, and it just didn't get me into the holiday spirit at all. I switched to another station after just a few songs and it was a much better experience.
2. Sarah - 1/5: Honestly, Magic 104 1 holiday music station was a total letdown. The songs they played felt outdated and out of touch with modern holiday music. It seemed like they were just playing the same old classics on loop, without considering that people might want to hear something new or different. The lack of diversity in their playlist was a real disappointment, and I ended up switching to a different station that offered a fresher selection of holiday tunes.
3. Mike - 2/5: I was not impressed with Magic 104 1 holiday music station. The songs they played were cliché and predictable, and it felt like they were just going through the motions. There are so many great holiday songs out there, but they stuck to the same old ones that everyone has heard a million times. I was hoping for a more unique and eclectic mix of holiday music, but sadly, this station didn't deliver. I won't be tuning in again.
4. Emily - 3/5: While I appreciate the effort to create a dedicated holiday music station, I found Magic 104 1 to be quite average. The selection of songs was decent, but there was nothing particularly outstanding or memorable about their playlist. It felt like the station played it safe with the usual holiday classics, without taking any risks or offering anything fresh. I would have liked to hear more diverse and lesser-known holiday songs to truly get into the holiday spirit. Overall, it was an okay experience, but I don't think I would actively seek out this station in the future.
