Rinus Van de Velde: The Villagers

Rinus Van de Velde pulls at the threads of cultural and intellectual history with a practice that operates through a system of imagination, quotation, reference and adaption. Over the years he has increasingly evolved towards a total artist with a diverse practice that encompasses drawing, sculpture, installation and film. Central in his works is the tension between fiction and reality, playing with different alter-ego narratives, quoting art history, cinema or literature and constructing an alternative universe where his narratives come to life.

For his fifth solo exhibition at Tim Van Laere Gallery, Van de Velde brings together the premiere of his first film, three installations, small scale color pencil drawings and large scale charcoal drawings. This film, entitled The Villagers, was recorded entirely in the artist’s studio, featuring his friends, assistants, gallerist and himself. The storyline was completely developed out of the 17 decors that were build out of cardboard in the artist’s studio. This results in a concatenation of individual fragments that are only connected to each other through the sequence and editing of the scenes. The film follows the lives of a series of characters who live in a small village in an undefined landscape. The realistic production of high quality contrasts with the constructed, abstracted environment and the fictional characters that are played by no professionally trained actors. This emphasizes the tension between fiction and reality and ensures that we as spectators have little guidance. It all feels so familiar, but at the same time it is so clearly rooted in fake, copy and counterfeit, because no element pretends to be “real”.

The three installations in the exhibition, show the three life-size decors that were build in the artist’s studio and play a significant role in The Villagers. They display the eye of detail the artist has put in the making of the decors, making even the smallest attribute like coffee cups, hamburgers and light fixtures out of cardboard, making it one fictitious whole. The decors and scenes that took place where also appropriated in the large scale charcoal drawings and small scale color drawings where they reveal new aspects of the greater narrative. In other drawings he quotes on works of other artists and recontextualises the image to fit in with his narrative with which he creates a paradigm shift that prompts a re-evaluation of the trajectories that objects and ideas travel across time and media.

Rinus Van de Velde (1983) lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. Recent solo exhibitions include S.MA.K., Ghent, Belgium; Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, The Netherlands; CAC Malaga, Malaga, Spain; Kunstpalais Erlangen, Germany; Baerum Kulturhus, Sandvika, Norway; Nest, The Hague, The Netherlands, among others.

Eli Roth Showed 200 Native Amazon Villagers Their First Film And It Was "Cannibal Holocaust"

As his upcoming cannibalism film The Green Inferno is currently in pre-production, Eli Roth and a small crew traveled to a remote village along the Amazon River that has "no electricity, no running water, nothing," to prep for the film. A village so remote, Roth told Movieline, that none of the locals had ever seen a film in their lives.

"We said, 'Can we shoot here?' and talked to them, and our producers said 'We have to explain to them what a movie is. They’ve never seen a television,'" He explained. So, in an effort to do their duty and spread the magic of film around the world, Roth and his crew brought a generator and set up a television to screen something on. Their film of choice, Roth?

"I thought they were going to show them E.T. or The Wizard of Oz," Roth continued, "but they showed them Cannibal Holocaust to see how much they could handle." If you're not aware, Cannibal Holocaust is a 1980 Italian film that was one of the first to utilize the now-popular "found footage" style of narrative, and it's gory as hell, so much so that the director, Ruggero Deodato, was brought up on obscenity and murder charges because authorities thought it was a real, straight-up snuff film.

The villagers, apparently, did not. "The villagers thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen," Roth revealed. "They thought it was a comedy!" It was by screening the film for the villagers that Roth selected 200 of them to appear as extras in his film, which will begin filming in two weeks.

Being a witch also means being in touch with your emotions and embracing your shadow self. You understand that darkness and light are both integral parts of life, and you honor and embrace all aspects of yourself. You acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses and use them to grow and evolve on your spiritual journey. As a witch, you have a deep connection with the moon and its phases. You understand the energy and power that each lunar cycle brings, and you use this knowledge to manifest your desires. You celebrate the full moon by performing rituals and casting spells, harnessing the heightened energy of this sacred time. Being a witch is not just about casting spells and performing rituals; it's a way of life. It's about embodying your true self and embracing your magic. It's about using your power responsibly and with integrity, always seeking to create positive change and spread love and light in the world. As you continue on your journey as a witch, remember to always trust yourself and your intuition. Embrace your unique gifts and talents, and use them to make a difference. And most importantly, never forget the power you hold within you, because as a witch, you are a force to be reckoned with..

I didn't enjoy "Simgs you re a wutxh" at all. The plot was confusing and hard to follow, and the characters were dull and underdeveloped. The writing style was also very choppy and it felt like sentences were missing or out of place. Overall, I was disappointed and wouldn't recommend this book to others.

I found "Simgs you re a wutxh" to be a bit of a letdown. The concept had potential, but it fell flat in execution. The pacing was slow, and the story was filled with cliched tropes and predictable twists. The dialogue also felt forced and unconvincing. While I appreciate the effort, it just didn't resonate with me.

"Simgs you re a wutxh" had an interesting premise, but it failed to deliver. The world-building was inconsistent and lacked depth, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. The characters lacked development and were hard to connect with. Additionally, the plot felt repetitive and dragged on in several places. Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to my expectations.
