Salem’s connection to Halloween begins with the tragic events that unfolded during the Salem Witch Trials. The 19 innocent victims who lost their lives in 1692 were not witches, they were only so accused due to Puritan beliefs of the time. The Salem Witch Trials were later revived with Arthur Miller’s 1953 work, The Crucible, and again in 1992 during the tercentenary of the events and the unveiling of the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.
By 1982, the City has planned the first Salem Haunted Happenings Festival during Halloween weekend. The festival was an effort to provide family-friendly events for guests who were interested in visiting the “Witch City.” Following the first festival’s success with about 50,000 guests in attendance, the annual event has continued to grow each season, drawing everyone from families, couples, history buffs, and Halloween enthusiasts from all over the world.

While Salem was not the only location in the United States that executed suspected “witches,” these trials became the most famous and forever changed the history of Salem, also known today as “Witch City”.
As time went on, the manifestations became more intense and targeted specifically against John Bell and his daughter, Betsy. The entity, known as the Bell Witch, started communicating with the family through voices. The voice claimed to be a spirit that could predict the future, answer questions, and even recite the Bible verbatim. It displayed an extensive knowledge of the past and present, which perplexed and terrified the Bells. The Bell Witch often targeted John Bell with physical attacks. He would be slapped, pinched, and poked by an invisible force. His health deteriorated rapidly under the constant assault, leading to his death in 1820. It was later speculated that the Bell Witch played a part in his demise. News of the haunting spread throughout the community, attracting curious visitors and skeptics. Many attempted to debunk the phenomena, but their efforts only seemed to fuel the Bell Witch's fury. People claimed to witness chairs moving on their own, objects being thrown across the room, and voices emanating from thin air. The climax of the haunting occurred during Betsy Bell's engagement ceremony. The Bell Witch interrupted the celebration, taunting and harassing guests to the point where they fled in terror. It was then that Betsy broke off her engagement, unable to bear the supernatural mayhem any longer. After seven years of torment, the Bell Witch haunting suddenly ceased in 1821. The entity declared that it would return in 107 years and left the Bell family to pick up the pieces. The case remains unsolved and has become legendary in the realm of paranormal activity.
