In the realm of myths and legends, tales of witches have always held a certain captivating allure. One such mysterious and enigmatic figure is known as the Pomegranate Witch. This enchantress possesses an air of magic and power, intertwined with the essence of the pomegranate fruit. Legends say that the Pomegranate Witch was born from the seeds of a pomegranate tree. As the tree bore its fruits, the witch emerged from within, adorned with deep crimson robes and a crown made of pomegranate blossoms. Her presence is said to be both enchanting and intimidating, captivating those who dare to encounter her.
Reading their blog, I was impressed as well by how they wrote about the horrors of the slave trade and tied it to culinary history.
Left over fresh salmon to which I added onions, and an egg to bind it all together, seasoned Italian breadcrumbs and about 6 minutes frying in a pan with olive oil, salt and pepper and voila, a delicious and easy dinner. The incredible event is a Party with a Purpose, put on by ESSENCE Magazine, which has grown over 27 years to be one of the premiere gatherings for Black music, entertainment and culture drawing averages of 500,000 attendees annually.

Pomegranates, with their vibrant ruby-red seeds and sweetly tart flavor, are believed to hold magical properties, and the witch has mastered the art of extracting their essence.
Five Black Women-Owned Wineries To Support Now
Launching and growing a winery is no easy feat, especially if you are a woman and a minority. Like many industries, the wine business has historically been a white man’s world, with women, especially those of color, significantly less represented. In California, where only 10 percent of wineries have a female as head winemaker, an even smaller number of female winemakers (.004 percent) own the winery. (Source: Women Winemakers of California and Beyond ). And when adding Black women into the mix, the numbers become miniscule.
Lack of representation is only one of a number of challenges that Black women entrepreneurs face. From securing outside investors and low-interest bank funding, to finding mentors and joining networks, starting a business as a black woman requires a lot of gumption. Yet there are Black women winery owners who are leading the way, tending the vines as well as the bottom line. These leaders provide much-needed inspiration for the next generation of Black women business owners.
Robin and Andréa McBride, owners of California’s McBride Sisters winery, are two Black sisters who are doing just that. The winery, founded in the early 2000s, is now one of the largest Black-owned wineries in the U.S. Despite not always being taken seriously and often being met with skepticism, the McBrides realized their hard-earned success. “You have to have an extreme case of optimism and thick skin to be successful [as a woman of color] in this business.” (McBrideSisters.com)

I had never heard of the McBride Sisters before searching for BIPOC winemakers and winery owners for this post. I searched online for wines to be delivered to my door and found that because people are focused on this topic this month, there are many wineries to choose from. I find it somewhat like International Women’s day, March 8th. Why should we only celebrate BIPOC winery owners and winemakers in February, why not all year long. I commit to writing about and buying wines from BIPOC winey owners all year. I’ve always been focused on Women in wine. Always. Now I’ll add a new series about wineries owned by BIPOC owners and winemakers. I’ll be looking for good wines and good stories to share.

Some view her as a symbol of female empowerment, with her ability to command the forces of nature and shape her destiny. Whether she is seen as an enchanting sorceress or a fearsome guardian, the Pomegranate Witch continues to captivate the imaginations of those who have heard her tale.
