The Ring is about a single spooky, cursed movie and Sinister is about a box o’ spooky, cursed movies. The similarity there isn’t coincidental. After watching The Ring, co-writer C. Robert Cargill, had a dream about going into his attic and finding a bunch of films that had the same kind of grizzly murder footage on them as the home movies that show up in Sinister. In fact, that dream was turned into the movie’s opening shot.
In the Hebrew Bible, Moses warns the Jewish people about worshipping Moloch Leviticus 18 21 states, You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Moloch, and so profane the name of your God. Afraid of the Dark features the Plushkins; the original three Plushbabies wearing masks patterned after Balloon Boy, Chica, Foxy and Freddy Fazbear, using masks from the Spooky Mansion stage, Trick or Treat.
Some have even claimed to have seen apparitions and felt the touch of invisible hands. The curse of Dreadbear seems to have a particular effect on those with a weak heart or a fragile psyche. Why is Sinister (2012) so scary?
I’m hoping this isn’t a repeat question — doesn’t look like something that’s come up before, but apologies if it has. Tagged as spoilers for minor indirect ones in this post and because I welcome them in the comments.
I guess all I have to say is in the question: why? The story is downright goofy if you think about it too long, the acting is fine but I’m having trouble thinking of standout performances, the snuff films are incredible but also only a small part of the runtime, I don’t remember any jump scares or big “holyshit” scenes…
And yet I’m here at 2am, frozen in my bed with my heart pounding in fear because I remembered the ending scene…despite the fact that I live in an apartment and have no children, so like, even if I ended up in a boogie house who’s gonna get me, my cat? But I am too scared to sleep nonetheless.
So I’m trying to intellectualize it and am coming up short. It’s objectively ridiculous that no one turns the lights on in this film, but I ain’t laughing, I’m terrified. I couldn’t tell you what the soundtrack is or if there even was one. Similar movies that come to mind, like Paranormal Activity, are fine but not really all that scary. And on paper this seems like a perfectly average, maybe even mediocre movie, but at least as a cult hit it has a reputation for being absolutely piss-your-pants scary, and I am following popular opinion. It just seems to be so much more than the sum of its parts, but I don’t know what hat makes it all come together.
Please, horror thought leaders: what is going on here? Why am I so afraid of a movie where the big bad is called Mr. boogie, for Pete’s sake? What is it that’s working so well here, and how?
