Tuffy's Unique Personality: How the NC State Mascot Reflects the Spirit of the University

By admin

The North Carolina State University mascot is the Wolfpack. The Wolfpack is a representation of strength, unity, and determination. The origins of the Wolfpack can be traced back to the late 1800s when the university's football team was nicknamed the "Red Terrors." However, it was not until 1921 that the term "Wolfpack" was officially chosen as the mascot. The choice of the Wolfpack as the mascot reflects the university's commitment to teamwork and camaraderie. The term "Wolfpack" signifies a close-knit community where individuals work together towards a common goal.

I really wanted to like this book. Meg Cabot was one of my favorite authors growing up, and we’re from the same home town. One of my fondest memories is my mom buying me so many of her books at a book signing she did, they were my prized possessions in middle and high school.
This book though? Oof. Felt very old school YA (back when there was a whole teen division in publishing), and incredibly repetitive. Did you know Jess was the Chosen One?? And Esther was the Bringer of Light? Did you forget? Don’t worry, I’ll remind you!!
The whole “Derrick has a secret” thing was anticlimactic but oh well.
This book felt very much like a publisher urged Meg Cabot to write a witchy romance book for the tiktok algorithm. Like… the booktok-ification of the publishing world has to stop! It’s too much!
1 use of the word “paws” as substitute for male hands, only this time it was Derrick thinking it about Will.
Will is an alcoholic right? Like… that’s what was going on… right? He’s truly the part of the book I found most interesting - if he already had a crush on Jess but her love spell didn’t work why did he start acting obsessed randomly? If the love spell didn’t work then why does he act guilty/love struck around her still? My dude it’s been (probably) 15 years since then!!

All American Girl is one of my all time favorite teen books so I've been really excited to explore Meg Cabot's adult books recently. This is the fourth one I've read and while I think she is a really talented writer I think teen characters are where she shines. Ester and Gabby ended up being my favorite characters in this one. I loved their relationship and how they supported each other! I also thought Ester was a great character overall! I loved how unfazed she was by all the paranormal happenings. I also really enjoyed the way she was able to resolved the town's issues. I never connected with Jessica the same way. I appreciated her feminism but it sometimes came up at inappropriate times. It is true that things women like are often considered silly but that doesn't mean that sending your friends make up photos support should come over learning how to save the town. I also didn't love her and Derrick's relationship. It moved really quickly but they also didn't trust each other very well. Also it's never fun to see fully grown adults still dealing with stuff from high school. I know it happens sometimes but it's not ideal. At the end of the day I'm glad I read this one but I'm not sure I'll continue the series.

Thanks to netgalley, Meg Cabot and Avon for letting me read this one early! All opinions are my own.

percyflies's review against another edition

This was a fun enough reading experience throughout but just for the vibes.

Very autumnal/Halloween appropriate book. However, there is a big event we’re leading up to that ends in the most anticlimactic way that made the rest of the build up feel pointless.

Also didn’t buy into the romance being anything but lust.

Might check out another in the series if reviews had good things to say about the plot itself but this was disappointing.

Reviews for "Tuffy the Wolf: The Story behind the NC State Mascot's Name"

1. John - 2/5 Stars - I was really disappointed with the NC State mascot. I felt that it lacked creativity and originality. It's just another generic wolf costume that looks like it was designed by a high school student. I expected more from a university with such a prestigious athletic program. Overall, I found the mascot to be forgettable and unimpressive.
2. Sarah - 3/5 Stars - The NC State mascot is alright, but it lacks the charm and engagement that other mascots bring. It seems like the person inside the costume is just going through the motions without any real enthusiasm. The costume itself is not very visually appealing either. While it does represent the university's identity, I think they could have executed it in a more exciting way. Overall, it's an average mascot, nothing special.
3. David - 1/5 Stars - I can't understand why NC State chose such a silly and ridiculous mascot. It's not intimidating or even remotely cool. The mascot looks like a cheap knockoff of other wolf mascots out there. The design is uninspired and lacks any creativity. I was expecting something more unique and representative of the university's spirit. It's a shame that such an esteemed institution settled for such a lackluster mascot.
4. Emily - 2/5 Stars - I was extremely disappointed with the NC State mascot. I feel like it fails to connect with the students and fans on a deeper level. The design of the costume is outdated and doesn't feel modern or exciting. I think the university should consider revamping the mascot to create a stronger bond with their community. Overall, I believe the NC State mascot has a lot of room for improvement.
